All dental practices must comply with HTM 01-05 (Decontamination in primary care dental practices, 2013). The standard requires a record of every sterilisation cycle demonstrating validated parameters (time, temperature, pressure), daily Helix or Bowie-Dick tests for vacuum sterilisers, and a dedicated logbook per machine. Records must be kept for a minimum of two years. In England, practices must be CQC-registered under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. CQC prosecutions for Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) breaches carry unlimited fines — reported fines range up to £2.5 million. HTM 01-05 explicitly warns that autoclave thermal printouts fade over time — digital records solve this.
