The dental practice in Portugal is subject to Decreto-Lei n.º 127/2014, of 22 August, and to Portaria n.º 99/2024/1, of 13 March, which entered into force on 14 March 2024. The new Portaria introduces specific rules for the reprocessing of multi-use medical devices, including the separation of decontamination and sterilization zones and the automatic or mechanical recording of cycles — verified by the ERS inspection form mod-133_02. Already-licensed practices have five years — until 14 March 2029 — to comply with the new technical requirements. The framework is completed by NP EN ISO 17665-1:2010, EN 13060 (Class B mandatory for hollow instruments), and NP EN ISO 13485. ERS may apply administrative fines up to €44,891.81; IGAS may conduct unannounced inspections and order suspensions. Registration with the Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas (Lei n.º 110/91) is mandatory.
