Portugal has no specific obligation for traceability of veterinary surgical-instrument sterilization. Clinics with surgical activity that document reprocessing demonstrate the professional standard the modern pet owner expects.
Veterinary medicine in Portugal is regulated by the Order of Veterinary Doctors (OMV) and the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV). Veterinary medical care centers (CAMV) operate under their own legal regime. Important: in Portuguese regulatory texts *esterilização* most commonly refers to the surgical sterilization of animals (spay/neuter); the sterilization of surgical instruments is not the subject of a specific Portaria in Portugal. Clinics with surgical activity use autoclaves (EN 13060) and adopt reprocessing documentation as professional best practice, under the duty of care arising from the OMV Code of Conduct. Digital traceability documents professional diligence and provides protection in the event of a claim.
Decreto-Lei n.º 184/2009, of 11 August (CAMV) · Decreto-Lei n.º 276/2001, of 17 October (companion animals) · OMV Code of Conduct · EN 13060 · NP EN ISO 17665-1:2010 (applied by analogy)
