Podology was recognized as a diagnostic and therapeutic profession by Lei n.º 65/2014, of 28 August. The professional license card (cédula profissional) is issued by ACSS — the National Health-System Administration. The Portuguese Podiatry Association (APP), founded in 1999, represents around 90% of Portuguese podologists; the President in 2023 (Manuel Portela) estimates around 500 active podologists, with 70 to 80% concentrated in the northern region. The podiatry clinic may need ERS registration as a private healthcare unit if invasive procedures are performed. There is no specific Portaria for podiatry sterilization — regulation focuses on the practitioner, not the facility. But podologists handle blood-contact procedures (nail surgery, callus debridement, diabetic foot care), so rigorous sterilization is a universally applied professional standard.
