Acupuncture in Switzerland is NOT regulated at the federal level as a stand-alone medical profession — unlike Luxembourg, where acupuncture is reserved to physicians, and Germany, which has the Heilpraktiker pathway. Some cantons (Basel-Stadt notably) require cantonal authorization (Bewilligungspflicht) for the practice of acupuncture as a paramedical activity. Professional recognition comes via the ASCA (Swiss Foundation for Complementary Medicine) and EMR (Empirical Medicine Register) registers for reimbursement by supplementary insurance.
